destination

Amalfi Coast, Italy

the postcard trip that earns the postcard. anchor in one town, ferry the rest.

vibe
cliffside, lemon groves, long lunches, blue water
best time
late May–June, September–mid-October. skip august (crowds + heat).
ideal length
4–6 days, anchor in one town, day-trip the rest.
scout's take

the amalfi coast rewards squads that pick a base and stay put. don't hop hotels every two days; the roads are beautiful and slow. positano is the photo, but it's also the most crowded and expensive. sorrento has the best transit (train to naples, ferries everywhere) and is the smartest base for a first-time squad. praiano, between positano and amalfi, is the underrated pick. ferries beat the bus for inter-town travel between may and october. say no to capri unless the squad has six full days. say yes to the path of the gods hike, even if only one of you is a hiker. lemons everywhere: the food, the drinks, the soap in your hotel.

things to do

path of the gods hike

the famous coastal trail from bomerano to nocelle. 3 hours, 7km, 500m descent. book a guide if you want commentary; otherwise it's well-marked.

ferry positano + amalfi + ravello

between may and october, the small ferries are the best transit. positano for the photo, amalfi for the cathedral, ravello for the views.

villa cimbrone gardens (ravello)

the "terrace of infinity" is the view that gets reposted. ravello is 30 min uphill from amalfi by bus or taxi.

lemon grove tour

sorrento + amalfi area. two hours. ends with limoncello + lemon cake. book ahead in summer.

capri day trip

a long day. ferry from sorrento, blue grotto if seas are calm, lunch in anacapri. skip if the squad has fewer than 5 days.

evening passeggiata

every coastal town has the early-evening walk. just be on the main street between 6 and 8pm. it's the trip's pulse.

where to stay

sorrento

best transit base. train to naples + pompeii, ferries to everywhere. less photogenic than positano, far easier.

positano

the postcard. expensive, steep, book a hotel with a lift. for a squad that wants the photo and is willing to pay.

praiano

between positano and amalfi. quiet, dramatic, much cheaper. a car or scheduled bus needed.

amalfi town

the medieval town. central, ferry-friendly, a step down in price from positano. underrated.

flight hint

fly into naples (NAP). circumvesuviana train to sorrento (90 min) or pre-arrange a transfer (45 min). ferries connect coast towns may–october. don't rent a car unless someone really wants to drive the cliffs.

plan amalfi coast with the squad.
