New York City, USA

the squad trip that makes everyone a different version of themselves. plan dinner first.

vibe
world city, neighborhoods, food obsession, energy at every hour
best time
late April–June, September–October. avoid august (humid).
ideal length
5–7 days for a first squad trip
scout's take

nyc rewards a squad that picks two neighborhoods and lives in them, instead of a museum-marathon. plan dinner reservations first; everything else fills in around them. brooklyn (williamsburg, fort greene, bushwick) is where the squad eats and goes out; manhattan (lower east side, west village, soho) is where you wander. don't try to do all five boroughs in a weekend. the subway is the unlock; cabs are for late nights only. the underrated move is a long walk: brooklyn bridge into dumbo, west village to high line to chelsea, central park east to met. spring + fall are the seasons that show off; summer is a humid blur and winter is its own kind of trip.

things to do

brooklyn bridge + dumbo walk

manhattan-side at golden hour, walk into dumbo for sunset. time out market and grimaldi's within reach. one of the best free hours in nyc.

met museum or moma

pick one. the met for breadth (book ahead summer weekends), moma for impact in 2 hours. don't try both in a day.

west village + high line

wander the west village, walk the high line up to chelsea market for lunch. peak nyc-on-foot.

food crawl: russ & daughters → katz's → veselka

lower east side. bagel + lox, pastrami sandwich, pierogis. pace the squad; this is a 4-hour walk.

jazz at smalls or dizzy's

smalls in the village (dive, real). dizzy's at lincoln center (polished, view). either is a nyc rite.

broadway show

book before you leave. todaytix lottery if you're flexible. the lincoln center off-broadway calendar is worth a look.

where to stay

lower east side / east village

central, walkable food + bars, real new york feel. younger squad, no problem.

west village

pretty, expensive, leafy. quieter, more grown-up. high line + meatpacking on foot.

williamsburg, brooklyn

across the bridge. food + nightlife scene, cheaper than manhattan, easy l train into the city.

soho

shopping + boutique hotels, central. busy by day, calmer at night.

midtown

closest to theater + central park. business-hotel feel, but most efficient if you're doing broadway.

flight hint

three airports: jfk (queens, taxi $70+), lga (queens, fastest if from US), ewr (newark, nj). taxi from lga is cheapest; airtrain at jfk + ewr connects to subway/path. uber and yellow cab both work.

plan new york city with the squad.
